    These days where the economy moves online and some high street shops close, on-line shops can bring a lot of extra income and profit to individuals and businesses.

    E-commerce engines

    Most on-line shops use e-commerce engines. Instead of having custom made html pages, they have a program running on the server that generates the product pages, allowing the owners to easily add/remove/change their products on the engine's database.   E-commerce engines have several drawbacks:
    • Restrictions: On a normal webpage anything the web developer wishes is possible, while on an engine page, only the limited things the engine can do are possible (e.g. most engines don't allow products to have a drop down list with different prices, some not even a simple drop down list, like product colours or sizes). Some engines are more capable, but charge much more for additional options.
    • Risk: Most engines need the website's server specially configured, or worse, a special server from the supplying company. This locks the customer with them and makes moving to another server very difficult, especially if the supplying company goes under. With most engines if the supplying service deteriorates or stops completely (supplier goes under) all their customers lose their websites as they cannot be transferred to a different service. We have met people who went through that and they were not happy!
    • Rental: Many engines work on a rental basis, that is they charge monthly or yearly fees which imply not only an ongoing expense but also being locked with the fate and quality of service of the providing companies.
